Breaking the cycle of homelessness for 20 years
While this event is lighthearted, the reason for it is not. Every single night of the year, our 200-bed residential facility is at capacity. The need for Center services is greater than ever.
The Center for the Homeless began 20 years ago, when a local hotel that more than 100 impoverished citizens called home burned to the ground in the middle of winter. Our community came together in an incredible way. Within one week, 17 busloads of resources and hundreds of willing volunteers were available to help.
Today, the Center has served more than 44,000 men, women and children, not only by providing them with a meal and a warm bed for the night, but also by linking them up with the programs, agencies and people who can help them break the cycle of homelessness. Events like the Dancing with Our Stars Miracle Auction are extremely important to our mission. More than 85 percent of our funding comes from private donations. It takes a community to break the cycle of homelessness. Please join us.

Oprah Winfrey Show Visits Local Dance Studio
MISHAWAKA, IN - A production crew from The Oprah Winfrey Show visited DanceSport on the plaza ballroom dance studio friday to film footage for an upcoming episode. The footage featured a new dance student, Deneen Carmichael, 33, of Granger, who submitted a story on Oprah.comabout how the ABC television show Dancing with the Stars inspired her to begin taking ballroom dance lessons.
The crew was onsite at the studio for 5 hours filming Carmichael's private lesson with studio owner Brian O'Day, a group Cha Cha lesson and open dancing by Carmichael and O'Day, the studio's students and their instructors, and local dance enthusiasts.
Carmichael responded to a viewer input form on Oprah.com on February 6 and received immediate feedback from one of the show's associate producers. Within a week, the show had made arrangements with the O'Days and Carmichael to send a crew out to film at the studio.
"We are thrilled that The Oprah Winfrey Show took an interest in Deneen's story and our studio and that we can be part of the national ballroom dance sensation that has been growing as a result o fDancing with the Stars," said O'Day

Dancing with the Stars champion Julianne Hough's big brother Derek is also a pro on the show—and he has a big surprise for an unsuspecting stay-at-home mom!
Deneen wrote in to The Oprah Show because she is a huge fan of Dancing with the Stars. The celebrities' cha-chas, waltzes and mambos inspired her so much, Deneen even took up ballroom dancing lessons.
As Deneen perfects her dance moves during a class, Derek sneaks into the studio to deliver some news that leaves her speechless. "You asked to be transformed into a ballroom superstar. Well, I am here to do something about that," Derek says. "You and I are going to be doing a little one-on-one dance training because next week, guess what? We are going to be dancing on Oprah!"
"Oh my god!" Deneen says.

Deneen's dancing dreams come true when she takes the stage to perform a mambo with Derek. She doesn't miss a beat—you'd never guess that Deneen had a mere three days to practice—or that she just had a baby 15 months ago! "You did a great job," Oprah says. "You can be proud of yourself."
Was Deneen's Dancing with the Stars experience all that she hoped it would be? "Oh, it's unbelievable," she says. "I mean, truly it's unbelievable. I'm still pinching myself."
